It has been 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story movie was released, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the plot but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Previous Film
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her outfit.
It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
