The network's Leading Fresh Series of 2025 Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
