The Grisly Animated Film Ending That Haunts Viewers
Among all the mature cartoon movies I have ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the fear-filled conclusion of the viscerally violent and deeply subversive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker developed a grim, melancholy , often savage world with a few small , forlorn twinges of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it originated from an impulse to advance the medium further, the filmmaker explained that it was rather an attempt to express a global, cross-cultural theme concerning “the common origin of all wars.”
That message is conveyed via a group of brightly hued teddy bears , openly inspired by a popular series of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a community centered on aggression as well as the military-industrial complex, many of these creatures are consumed by slaughtering the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text that tells the bears they used to be masters of the woodland, until the horned beings forced them out.
Others have not completely accepted the brainwashing, , choose to sample narcotics and mate outdoors.
In contrast to their friendly counterparts, these bright beings have visible sexual organs , obvious libidos.
For one notably brutal, cynical bear, Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns becomes a route to control — and specifically to dominance over his more tender, nicer brother Tubby.
The character is a bully and an apparent psychopath , and as terror overcomes his squad and takes his comrades individually, he takes more and more influence for himself, via progressively violent, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are experiencing their own horror, as a growing, harmful creature in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker said. “However it evolves into a more serious and melancholic film. And by the end, it transforms into a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like among the whimsical movies by an iconic filmmaker, which find a naughty glee in letting cartoon characters curse, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Afterward it evolves into closer to a more grim film from the same creator, featuring progressively explicit brutality , a noticeable link to the actual suffering of war.
Ultimately, it’s an outright extreme drama carnage.
The fear that turns the film a perfect Halloween viewing kicks in much sooner than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated fans of gore, for fans of intense movies who desire to view something they’ve never seen on-screen before, and can endure a plot that offers unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dark room free from interruptions, and the conclusion will crawl deep within you and stay with you.
