The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
