R360 Competition Recruits Face Decade-Long Exclusion from National Rugby League

The athlete won 20 test matches for the All Blacks before switching representation to Samoa.

The NRL's governing body has stated that players who join the “counterfeit” R360 will be banned for 10 years.

R360, scheduled to begin in late 2026, is seeking to lure rugby union and rugby league players with substantial agreements and a slimmed-down fixture list.

Prominent rugby league stars have reportedly been approached by the breakaway group, which will involve six to eight men's teams and women's teams operating from key urban centers around the world.

The Samoan the player, who is with the Warriors in the competition, has said he has had negotiations involving the new organization.

Papenhuyzen, Lomax, Payne Haas and Jye Gray are also reported to be considering joining the rebel league.

A group of rugby union countries, such as Australia, last week declared a ban on athletes signing with R360 playing global fixtures.

“We've listened to our clubs and we've taken firm action,” commented Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'Landys.

“Sadly, there will continually be entities that seek to pirate our code for monetary profit.

“They avoid funding in pathways or the advancement of players. They only leverage the dedication of others, putting players at risk of financial loss while benefiting financially.

“They are, in reality, imitating the sport.”

R360 is co-founded by former England World Cup winner Mike Tindall and funded by commercial backers.

After the possible union bans were revealed last week, it said: “We want to work collaboratively as integrated into the international rugby schedule.

“The event is arranged with customized calendars for male and female sides and the organization will release all players for test matches, as specified in their deals.”

R360 will apply for endorsement for its plans from World Rugby, rugby union's administrative organization, at its board session in 2026.
