Weather experts have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are expected to be low, so additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Temperatures Set to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this meant the weather was likely to lead to significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is completely essential.
