LeBron James's Historic Scoring Run Concludes, But Lakers Secure Win Over Toronto.
LeBron James was aware his historic streak of putting up 10+ points was in danger. When it mattered most, however, he wasn't bothered.
The right decision was to pass the rock – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, the legendary streak finished.
James's astounding streak of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten concluded on Thursday night, when the league's career points king was limited to a mere eight points in the Lakers' close triumph versus Toronto. He made the clutch helper, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura to hit a triple at the buzzer.
“None,” James said after being questioned about the streak ending. “The important thing is we won.”
A Selfless Choice Seals the Game
LeBron had the chance to tried to secure the contest – and extended the streak – with the last shot, yet he opted to dish the ball to Hachimura on the wing. Hachimura made the shot, prompting James celebrated immediately.
“Just playing the game correctly. Make the correct play,” James explained. That has always been my philosophy. It's how I was taught the game. I've played that way my whole career.”
He is very conscious of how many points he has at all times,” said the team's head coach the coach. He made the play like he’s done countless times.”
The Streak's Closing Chapter
LeBron checked back into the game for the final time at under five and a half minutes to go, the result along with the historic run both hanging in the balance. He had six points on a 3-for-15 performance then.
He managed a basket at under two minutes remaining to level the contest then missed a mid-range jumper with one minute to go that might have pushed him into double figures.
He passed up another shot – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves found him as time wound down, yet LeBron opted to make the extra pass instead.
“The basketball gods, when you play it correctly, they tend to bless you,” Redick added.
Reflecting on a Monumental Record
This incredible run commenced back in January 2007. It was easily the most extended streak of its kind the league has ever seen: MJ previously held a streak of 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem recorded 787, and Karl Malone recorded of 575 games.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” noted teammate Jake LaRavia.
He focuses on playing hoops. He could have shot but because of his nature as a player and his personality as a person, he executed the unselfish play, found Rui and we won the victory.”
Reaching double digits had typically been a guarantee early in the final period. Throughout his run, he had reached ten points entering the fourth over twelve hundred times prior to Thursday.
Yet two of those rare single-digit games through three quarters had occurred recently: He had nine points entering the final quarter against Dallas last week, and then had six points before the fourth quarter versus the Suns on Monday night.
James managed to keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it was over – but he still rejoiced all the same.
“I always just make the correct play. That’s automatic, win, lose or draw,” James affirmed. If you make the unselfish play, the sports deities forever returning the favor.”
