Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
