Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age
Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and performer whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading reggae music worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his life’s path. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff was beloved for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and positive spirit earned him a large and longstanding fanbase.
In addition to his music achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
He is among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
